Common ANTS found in Minnesota

Carpenter Ant

Large ants indigenous to many forested parts of the world
Build nests inside wood consisting of galleries chewed out with their mandibles, prerably in dead, damp wood.
Unlike termites, they do not consume wood
They discard material that resembles sawdust.
Carpenter ants work to build the nests that house eggs in environments with usually high humidity due to their sensitivity to environmental humidity.
These nests are called primary nests. Satellite nests are constructed once the primary nest is established and has begun to mature
Residents of satellite nests include older larvae, pupae, and some winged individuals. Only eggs, the newly hatched larvae, workers, and the queen reside in the primary nests.
As satellite nests do not have environmentally sensitive eggs, the ants can construct them in rather diverse locations that can actually be relatively dry

Field Ant

Formica is a genus of ants of the family Formicidae, commonly known as wood ants, mound ants, thatching ants, and field ants.
Formica is the type genus of the Formicidae, and of the subfamily Formicinae.
The type species of genus Formica is the European red wood ant Formica rufa.
Field ants create mounds in open areas like lawns and meadows.
They do not nest in homes but may come inside when swarming or searching for food. Inadequate weather stripping and cracked windows can let the pests indoors.
Mounds built close to the foundation may also enable the ants to more easily enter a home.

Odorous House Ant

Tapinoma sessile is a species of small ant that goes by the common names odorous house ant, sugar ant, stink ant, and coconut ant.
Their colonies are polydomous and polygynous.
Nests are found in a great variety of situations.
Indoor locations, odorous ants can nest in wall crevices, near heaters, water pipes, under carpets, beneath floors or sometimes behind paneling.
Outdoor locations, odorous house ants place their shallow nests beneath soil as well as in logs, mulch, debris and under rocks.

Pavement Ant

Tetramorium immigrans—also known as the immigrant pavement ant, pavement ant, and the sugar ant in parts of North America
It is an ant native to Europe, which also occurs as an introduced pest in North America.
Its common name comes from the fact that colonies in North America usually make their nests under pavement
Pavement ants in nature occur primarily in open meadows under rocks and other debris.
In more urban settings, pavement ants nest under sidewalks, under building foundations and under patios.
There is normally a single queen although larger colonies may have additional queens.
